The Netherlands’ First Postage Stamps

The William III Issue (1852)

The Netherlands issued its first official postage stamps on 1 January 1852, introducing prepaid postage nationwide and modernizing its postal system. This reform aligned the Dutch postal service with developments already underway in neighboring European countries.

The first Dutch stamps were issued in three denominations: 5 cent, 10 cent, and 15 cent, each corresponding to different domestic letter rates. All values featured a portrait of King William III, emphasizing royal authority and national identity. The design was restrained and formal, with a clear oval portrait surrounded by a simple ornamental frame.

These stamps were produced using line engraving and printed in color on white paper. As with most early issues, they were imperforate. The stamps were valid throughout the Netherlands and could be used for both local and longer-distance domestic mail.

The 1852 William III stamps remained in use until 1867, undergoing various color and paper changes during their lifespan. Despite these variations, the basic portrait design remained unchanged, providing continuity within the Dutch postal system.
