Portugal’s First Postage Stamps

The Maria II Issue (1853)

Portugal issued its first official postage stamps on 1 July 1853, introducing prepaid postage throughout the kingdom. This reform modernized the Portuguese postal system and brought it into line with other European countries that had already adopted postage stamps.

The first Portuguese stamps featured a portrait of Queen Maria II, whose image appeared on all denominations. The initial issue included multiple values, such as 25 réis, 50 réis, 100 réis, and 200 réis, intended to cover a range of domestic and international postal rates. The portrait design emphasized continuity of royal authority and followed the prevailing European tradition of monarch-based stamp imagery.

The stamps were produced using typographic printing and issued imperforate on white paper. The stamps were valid throughout mainland Portugal and its postal network

Prior to 1853, Portuguese postage rates were complex and often paid by the recipient. The introduction of prepaid stamps simplified postal accounting and standardized rates, improving efficiency for both postal officials and mail users. These reforms encouraged broader use of the postal service for business, government correspondence, and personal communication.

The Maria II stamps remained in use until 1855, when they were replaced by new designs following the queen’s death. Subsequent issues continued to build on the foundations laid by the first stamps, expanding denominations and improving production quality.
